The Cary Grant Gay Factor

“I’m going to suggest something radical: We’ll never know whether Grant was or was not gay, and it does not matter. What matters was that his image, for all its perfection, also had its points of flexibility — living intimately with a man for long stretches of time, doing cute man things together — that leaves the possibility open. Grant made millions of women swoon, and millions of straight men aspire to his likeness. But he also provided thousands of queer audience members with the hope that famous, successful, high-profile performers and homosexuality were not mutually exclusive, further suggesting straight, high-class masculinity as an elaborate masquerade.” [The Hairpin]

Company said the decline "reflects a light release schedule, as well as the continued transition to digital in the recorded music industry." Growth in France, Spain and Latin America was offset by drops in the U.S., Japan and the rest of Europe. In recorded music, WMG's top sellers during the last quarter included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bruno Mars, Lenny Kravitz, Blake Shelton and Jason Derulo. Its major acts during the fiscal year included Michael Buble (currently atop the U.S. album chart with his "Christmas" album), Cee Lo Green, James Blunt, the Chili Peppers and Mars. WMG's music publishing division, Warner/Chappell, announced small dips in revenue for the fiscal year and fourth quarter, related to an agreement about mechanical royalties payments accrued in prior years. Earnings report came on the heels of an internal announcement that chairman and ex-CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. would step down in January (Daily Variety, Dec. 6). Bronfman's departure follows WMG's abruptly terminated bid for EMI Music. Hungary passes new film law

Producer Andy Vajna wants to revive Hungarian filmmaking.BUDAPEST -- On Nov. 21, Hungarian lawmakers passed amendments to the country's film law, which industry insiders and analysts are touting as a game-changer that stands to reform and possibly reinvigorate the nation's struggling domestic cinema.Among other reforms, the legislation has secured a new source for public funding of films, improved oversight of how these funds will be spent, and streamlined the process for getting financial support to filmmakers. For producer Andy Vajna, who made his bones in Hollywood with such films as "Rambo" and "Total Recall" and the law's chief architect, these reforms, which represent more than almost a year of reorganization and wrangling, are a new beginning."It's been a long hard nine months," says Hungarian-born Vajna, appointed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban to oversee the legislative reform process, "and finally we have reached our goals. We have a film law, and a financial source for motion picture support."That financial source is 80% of the tax revenue earned by the national lottery in Hungary. It is estimated the lottery will generate about $10 million in 2012, which officials say will be enough to help finance up to eight domestic feature films, one animated film and one documentary over the next year,The new law simplifies the funding process by centering decision-making for state funding on a single office: the Hungarian National Film Fund, which -- underscoring the industry's new focus as a commercial asset -- is overseen by the National Development Ministry, not the National Resource Ministry that currently supervises cultural affairs.According to Vajna, the new law brings discipline, clarity and efficiency to the industry. "I want (the funding process) to be a see-through concept," Vajna says. "I want the whole funding system to be transparent. We want to oversee the projects and make sure they are developing properly."In 2010, Hungary's film financing process came under scrutiny when prominent local producer Gabor P. Koltai was accused of misappropriating public funds and defrauding the state financing system. The new law includes checks to safeguard against similar abuses and to lend professional support to the industry."We will be assisting (filmmakers)," Vajna says. "If you are in trouble we want to help. So we will not just be giving money away, we will be assisting and following up, making sure that money is being spent for what it was meant for. Above all, we will be seriously involved in approving the screenplays because that's where it all begins."The ultimate goal appears to be winning back the business of the Hungarian audience. According to authorities, in 2010 the market share of Hungarian cinema was only 4%.Vajna hopes that under the new system local filmmakers will be able to reconnect with Hungarians. "Right now, you have a situation where Hungarian films are not able to attract its own moviegoers," he said. "We have to do something to entice these people to come back." Sirius XM Shares Defy Gravity As Investors Wonder Whether Liberty Might Take Over

The satellite radio company’sshares are up 11.4% since early Thursday while other NASDAQ stocks collectively are down 4.4%. What’s going on? Well, it seems that many analysts who attended Liberty Media’s annual dog-and-pony show for them on Thursday came away convinced that Sirius XM is preparing to see John Malone lift his company’s 40% stake well past 50%. He has to wait until March to avoid taking a tax hit on such a move — and we all know how much Malone hates to pay taxes. After that there’d be a tax advantage: Sirius has $8B in net operating losses that could be used to shelter future payments. That’s great now, although the losses “sucked” when the company was racking them up,CEO Mel Karmazin told Liberty investors at last week’s gathering. So, is Liberty interested in buying Sirius? A lot of comments that Liberty CEO Greg Maffei made last week sure make it sound that way. “There are few businesses that I have as much confidence in,” he said.”Boy, it’s got a heck of a tail wind behind it. Find me another business” with as much opportunity. Sirius’ first consumer rate hike, coming in January,”is a great opportunity and there’s a potential for more…(Profit) margins will expand….It’s our kind of business.” He added that his company decided to convert its two tracking stocks — Liberty Starz and Liberty Capital — into a single, asset-backed security in part because “we’ve been seeking attractive investment opportunities.”So would Karmazin, whose contract runs through 2012,want Malone to move in? He didn’t rule it out. Karmazin says that Sirius is “generating so much free cash flow” that the board will consider whether it should return some of that to shareholders. That could include ashare repurchase that also would boost Malone’s stake, unless they agree to terms to prevent that. Some believe that Sirius would only repurchase shares if Malone agrees to pay a control premium. But there’s enough out there to persuade Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett upgrade Sirius to “buy” noting that a “mega share repurchase” is”a distinct possibility that we believe is a core part of Liberty Medias attraction to Sirius.”

Now over time, it is essential our Academy evolve and move ahead aswell. However for me, our role being an Academy isn't nearly business. Its aboutpassion, the talent symbolized in most in our peer groups, and also the incredibleprocess of story telling. My adoration for television began after i was youthful. I recall coming ontothe lot at CBS to look at The Carol Burnett Show. Today, I do not need to sneak to the lot. However I obtain the same emotional highwhen I go to the teams of our shows. My adoration for television hasn't numbed, and from the quality perspective, In my opinion we're inside a golden chronilogical age of television. Being an Academy, you should be very happy with the Emmys, but we have to remainrelevant with all of people beyond just September. We have to increase our brand awareness, our visibility and our stature. We have to get ready for the Academys future through initiatives for example:elevated professional development occasions, elevated revenue possibilities, including digital and proper partnersponsorships,a restored concentrate on diversity initiatives, elevated financial support for that philanthropic efforts from the Foundation,an offer to limit runaway production,a large-time Way forward for Television Summit backed through the Academy andhighlighting digital possibilities for the people. I've two-and-a-half decades of expertise in the leading television studio. I've direct knowledge about how our market is altering. It's things i dealwith every single day. My encounters like a Board Chair at other organizations has proven me that successin this role are only able to originate from listening, working together and building consensus. Leadership requires a lot more than tenure leadership is all about vision for future years- leadership is increased by hands-on, day-to-day experience, influence, andrelationships. After talking to the majority of you throughout yesteryear couple of several weeks, I'm urged bythe passion within this room to embrace the near future, not retain things as they are. And, there's passion within this room to maneuver past the politics that havesometimes limited the potency of this organization. This shouldn't be an election about maintaining business as always it's timefor us to evolve and embrace an image for future years. An image where we are able to fare better. However suspect that in executive suites, plenty of that sadness is tempered getting a basic relief that Jobs will not be controlling a business any more. Apple's stunning run of success roughly coincides with Pixar's, both under Jobs's leadership, so when Hollywood isn't embarrassed by people accomplishments, it must be. Apple's billions and Pixar's Oscars stand becoming an ongoing indictment of Hollywood management. I furthermore suspect you will discover more than a few individuals who're quietly wanting Apple's and Pixar's winning streaks will probably be hidden with Jobs, to ensure that they does not need to explain any more why they don't do things they way Jobs did. Jobs's companies reject the business, marketing-driven, test-the-hell-out-of-it, give-the-audience-what-they-want ethos of recent Hollywood. Jobs supported the primacy in the artist -- or otherwise the artist's vision. At Apple, that vision was always Jobs's own: the technologist as auteur. He'd a tale within the mind, as clearly every master storyteller, of how Apple's products should work and the way it'll sense of their services. He was relentless in trying to create that narrative to existence, without choice to concentrate groups or general market trends. Consider how antithetical that's to Hollywood. Current day tentpoles are not driven by any singular vision. Soulless, disposable photos will be the norm now. Does anybody believe "Eco-friendly Lantern" experienced Warner's pipeline just because a painter -- Martin Campbell, Greg Berlanti, anybody -- stood a Eco-friendly Lantern story they thought absolutely ought to be told? It showed up in this area of your energy-Warner's corporate agenda, plus it had the style of something created by committee. The identical may be mentioned for a lot of tentpoles.Plus there's the testing process. Designer Ron Cobb once mentioned in my opinion the problem with asking an audience exactly what it wants is always that what people want is going to be surprised, those can't inform you the best way to surprise them. Jobs always understood that. Can anybody imagine Apple handing a random audience lots of pre-release apple apple iphones or iPads after which it altering the system good comment cards?Jobs themselves wasn't any filmmaker, so he understood a lot better than to put themselves directly accountable for movies. It's not coincidence, though, that at Pixar it absolutely was company company directors -- not development professionals, not entrepreneurs, not necessarily Jobs themselves -- who got final say around the pictures. Company company directors continue being accountable, and Pixar remains proven to fire them or drop their projects, however they are unable to be overruled as extended because they are round the picture. Lots of people are actually uncomfortable watching Apple and Pixar generate accolades and profits, and not somewhat amplified. A little of this shown when Disney topper Michael Eisner infamously predicted "Finding Nemo" wouldn't be excellent and will also be a "reality check" for Pixar. See, in Hollywood's reality, what Apple and Pixar do shouldn't focus on all, plus it certainly shouldn't be effective than showbiz's method things. However, Jobs was legendary for that "Reality Distortion Area" that aided him charm people into doing the impossible. It absolutely was Jobs who gave Hollywood possible check. However doubt many individuals really heard it. Performance pioneerTo borrow a manifestation from Jobs, there's another factor. I've been asked for if Andy Serkis can win an Oscar for "Rise in the Planet in the Apes." In my opinion that could occur as soon as the Acad's Stars Branch can get comfortable adoring performances that you can't locate the actor's face -- basically, maybe never. Variety's L.A. theater critic Bob Verini, who's also an Oscar maven componen excellence, highlights the Acad has past recognizing movie pioneers with special Oscars, which at this time, Serkis's body at work just like a pioneer of performance capture acting (Gollum in "Master in the Rings," "King Kong" now Caesar in "Apes") makes him an even more than worthy honoree. And So I am getting in touch with the Acad to participate the twenty-first century and recognize Serkis getting a unique Oscar. It's not as nice as hearing "As well as the Oscar visits...In . but it may be a start. Contact David S. Cohen at david.cohen@variety.com

'Bring It On,' a tuner about cheerleaders, has a built-in aud but no real B'way pedigree.Within the NY testing room for that new touring manufacture of the musical "Take It On," you will find signs with arrows, helpfully labeled. One points the best way to downstage, another points up.Like a large amount from the cast for that musical -- featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tom Kitt, lyrics by Amanda Eco-friendly along with a book by Shaun Whitty -- consists of competitive cheerleaders who've never been in stage before. That's one of many explanations why the producers of "Take It On," Fox Theatricals, elected to accept show out on the highway this year, instead of move using their tryout in the Alliance Theater in Atlanta straight to Broadway."One-third in our cast are competitive cheerleaders," states producer Kristin Caskey of Fox Theatricals. "They are available from the real sports team attitude. We desired to have the ability to get everything exercised."And sports athletes are utilized to road games. This tactic of creating an excursion instead of going to Broadway has other advantages. "Implies that gain some awareness within the national awareness are usually those that gain momentum," states Fox's Mike Isaacson. It seems sensible here to construct the company, because the epicenter of competitive cheerleading isn't the Upper East Side of NY."Take It On," with a full routing this year, is created in cooperation with College Brands, which produced the nation's Senior High School Cheerleading Championship in 1980, and is the owner of or partners with the majority of the major competitive cheerleading occasions. That partially describes why presenters happen to be pleased to book the show, which has a built-in audience, despite the fact that there is no Broadway pedigree. Following the tour, states Isaacson, "we are keeping all options open."Fox also offers another from the non-Broadway tour choices this year, the circus show "Traces." This well-examined Off Broadway product through the Montreal-based collective 7 Fingers can also be wishing to exhibit on some Broadway road seasons."We are really flowing the trail blazed by 'Stomp,' " Isaacson states.Attention may also be compensated to a different not-for-Broadway product, directed by John Rando: a periodic tour of the musical version of "A Christmas Story," the legendary 1983 holiday movie noted for the adorable Indiana kid having a penchant for licking frozen flagpoles. Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour

Cirque du Soleil honors the King of Pop with its latest acrobatic production, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour. A Cirque du Soleil and Estate of Michael Jackson production of a show in one act written and directed by Jamie King. Creative guide, Guy Laliberte; director of creation, Chantal Tremblay; music designer, Kevin Antunes. The Mime - Salah Benlemqawanassa The Fanatics - Laurent Bourgeois, Larry Bourgeois, Julio Alberto Santiago, Tomohiko Tsujimoto Bubble - Terrance HarrisonThe Cirque du Soleil show that celebrates Michael Jackson, "The Immortal World Tour," is as singular as the performer himself. Part rock concert, part aerial fantasy, part multimedia extravaganza and part surreal performance art, the show, written and directed by Jamie King, manages to capture the essence of Jackson better than seems possible. Early reaction in Montreal indicates die-hard Jackson fans are ecstatic while non-believers remain so throughout, emerging more perplexed than elated. Still, even the show's detractors have to concede that as spectacle, "Immortal Tour" is one of a kind. A childlike Mime, more reminiscent of Marcel Marceau's Bip than Jackson himself, is our guide through the inevitable journey from childhood to death, although everyone involved with the show rightly insists it's not a biography. Instead it's more of an impressionist collage than a realistic piece of portraiture. The high, golden gates of Neverland part to lead us through a fantasy world where an animatronic baby Michael floats through the arena on a hot air balloon, while acrobats dressed in black float through the sky, their bodies illuminated to turn them into constellations. A live band plays with power and guts while the digitized voice of Michael sings along, joined by live backup singers. The total effect is of presence and absence at the same time. No one plays Jackson, but his presence is everywhere. He's depicted as a prophet of peace, someone who wanted good in the world for everyone. But in the "Ghost Stories" sequence, the dark side of the man comes out, with "Thriller" emerging as a voodoo funeral rite in which performers dress in white and Haitian spirit Baron Samedi floats above them all. Driving numbers like "Bad" turn into parables of how Jackson let his image take over, as giant versions of his signature hat and glove dwarf the action. Videos show Jackson driving himself -- dancing, dancing, dancing -- while clocks spin madly and the death we all know is coming races upon him. Songs like his prophetic "Gone Too Soon," with its lines "Born to amuse, to inspire to delight/Here one day and gone one night," acquire a new edge, and when a stage full of pulsating red hearts finally fades into darkness, we see an old black and white film of child Michael from The Jackson Five singing "I'll Be There" with the bittersweet quality he knew all his life. With a cast of more than 50 dancers and acrobats, teams of choreographers and more technical credits than some large-scale movie spectacles, it's hard to allot praise individually. But writer/director King has imposed a real shape onto this mass of material. Yes, it's uneven and overlong in its current format, but past produtions have illustrated that Cirque knows how to fix a show once it's up on their feet. Judging from the reaction of the Montreal crowd to the opening and the brisk ticket sales across North America, this show seems certain to have legs.Set, Mark Fisher; props and set, Michael Curry; costumes, Zaldy Goco; acrobatics designer, Germain Guillemot; rigging and equipment, Scott Osgood; projections, Olivier Goulet; lights, Martin Labrecque; sound, Francois Desjardins. Opened, reviewed Oct. 2, 2011. On tour indefinitely. Running time: 2 HOURS. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

John Turteltaub On Last Vegas

Pointing senior citizens' stag nightEighteen several days ago the purchase ended up being to Jack Nicholson to star inside the geriatric bachelor party movie Last Vegas. It seems as if he either passed or possibly is biding his time, but Last Vegas has acquired a director, in National Treasure's John Turteltaub. It's been all change towards the top, since Turteltaub is altering Peter Chelsom (Shall We Dance, Hannah Montana) which has departed for reasons unspecified. Turteltaub will get a script by Serta Fogelman (Cars, Bolt, Crazy Stupid Love) four extended out-of-touch pals within the 50s who reunite in Vegas for your wedding of Billy, the group's playboy and allegedly confirmed bachelor. The simple truth is, widower Paddy also takes a shine to Billy's lounge singer fiance.... It's Bachelor Party meets The Bucket List or perhaps the Hangover meets Inflammed Old Males or possibly a present to create lazy appear-bitey explanations from older films. The project is certainly going ahead at Mandate pictures, with Ray Mark (Dreamgirls) creating and Nathan Kahane (Juno) professional-creating. Nicholson aside (and Nicholson isn't within it yet), there's no cast up to now, but thinking about the truth that the director made both National Treasures as well as the Sorcerer's Apprentice, surely they can make room for Nicolas Cage to revisit the city that won him his Oscar.... A dishonest croupier maybe? Billy's wayward boy, along for your ride as well as the chicks?

What's Steve Jobs' Hollywood Legacy?

In a Disney board meeting in 2007, Boss Robert Iger talked about a proposal for the organization to include ships to its popular fleet by striking a certification cope with a recognised cruise line. Jobs objected, based on people acquainted with the meeting, quarrelling that Disney should own its ships instead of delegate its brand about the ocean. The charming new board member was persuasive and, despite a $2 billion cost, Disney ultimately added the Dream and, soon, the Fantasy to its number of possessed-and-operated luxury cruise ships.our editor recommendsAnalyst: Steve Jobs' Boss Departure May Have 'No Impact' on AppleApple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak: Jobs Resignation Wont Affect 'Quality of Company (Video)Apple Stock Dips, Company Manages to lose $5.5 Billion Morning After Jobs Boss Resignation That Jobs triggered Disney to show on the cent at this type of hefty price is proof of his influence, which stretches far beyond Apple, the organization he founded in 1976, to encompass Disney, Pixar and also the entire entertainment sphere. Jobs is really all pervading in Hollywood that after he resigned his Apple Boss just right August. 24 due to health issues connected with pancreatic cancer, the move reverberated through the industry. Associates now question whether Jobs continues his board responsibilities at Disney and just how his condition will impact his status as showbiz's top digital energy broker. The implications of his next progresses Hollywood likely is going to be significant. Disney and Pixar For 3 of history four fiscal years, Jobs continues to be absent from a lot more than 75 % of Disney board conferences. The organization rejected to go over the problem, but Jobs' condition was important enough for investor advisory firm Glass Lewis & Co. to recommend in March he 't be re-chosen to Disney's board. "I must think that he hasn't put much energy into Disney," an old insider informs The Hollywood Reporter. Yet investors re-chosen their most well-known director, most likely simply because they understood his value to the organization as counselor and sounding board for Iger along with other top professionals on key issues. Jobs assumed that role when he was Boss of Pixar, before joining Disney's board. In 2006, Iger, Boss of Disney for one year, desired to arrange a brand new distribution cope with Pixar, which, starting with 1995's Toy Story, had totally changed the animation business. With Jobs steering discussions for Pixar, Disney wound up having to pay $7.4 billion available to buy the organization outright. Jobs "could call all of the shots," states the insider, selling Pixar at its peak cost and attaining undoubtedly the biggest individual stake in Disney. Meanwhile, Disney also won, in a position to promote the large score by landing Pixar. The transaction gave Jobs what's now a 7.3 % stake in Disney and the chair about the 13-member board, that also includes Iger and former CEOs Orin Cruz of Local cafe and John Pepper of Procter & Gamble. Additionally to steering the cruiseship initiative, sources say Jobs soon assisted persuade Iger to purchase back most of the 335 United States Disney Stores that the organization had offered just 4 years earlier. Jobs assisted spearhead a redesign of individuals shops using a few of the same individuals who designed Apple Stores, along with a prototype first showed last year in Montebello, Calif. With Jobs, Iger includes a reliable agent. States the insider, "Paperwork was trumped if Steve conveyed to Bob a viewpoint.Inch Still, someone else with partners to Disney states Jobs is careful to not overstep his authority at the organization. "I never saw him being at all intrusive. It had been always the cheerleader, never 'do this' or 'do that.' " Would Disney act in a different way without Jobs? "Losing a sounding board of this level -- that's a loss of revenue,Inch states a resource you never know Iger and Jobs. However, "when it comes to real day-to-day relation to what Disney does, I don't think so." Still, without Jobs, animation guru John Lasseter would lose a friend in a critical time -- coming from the relatively disappointing performance of Cars 2. "The paperwork doesn't like just how much Pixar films cost," states an insider. "But nobody will wreck havoc on Lasseter while Jobs is about.Inch PHOTOS: Super Bowl's Most Legendary Advertisements iTunes Outdoors of Disney, probably the most apparent illustration of Jobs' influence over media distribution may be the creation in 2003 from the iTunes Music Store, which wouldn't have received the support from the record labels without Jobs. "The change came into being most importantly due to the sheer self-discipline of Steve," former RIAA mind Hilary Rosen told the authors of iCon Jobs: The Finest Second Act within the Good reputation for Business. "His sheer charisma and the intensity absolutely designed a difference." Jobs' vision has broken every part of Apple, taking its stock past $400 from under $100 at the outset of 2009. So while Apple's share cost has held fairly steady because the August. 24 announcement that Tim Prepare has had over as Boss, it might be unfair to anticipate Prepare to complement Jobs' influence as online music services for example Spotify and The planet pandora emerge to defend myself against iTunes. Still, Prepare is really a pressure, and that's why he offered as temporary Boss three occasions throughout Jobs' health-related absences and why Apple worked him a $383 million stock bonus to retain his services for the following nine years. And experts say it's no coincidence that Prepare's first large move as Boss ended up being to promote Eddy Signal, the executive responsible for the iTunes Store, to senior vice president Internet software and services. Signal has offered as Jobs' point guy using the galleries and record labels, therefore the move is viewed as an indication that Prepare is shoring up his relative lack of experience in content deals and expects to remain the course with Hollywood. "Marketing Signal transmits a note to both Apple's media partners and rivals that even without Jobs at the very top, Apple's disruption of media industries and discussing of profits using its partners continues,Inch Wired authored. There's also every indication that Prepare and Signal, like Jobs, are forward-thinking risk-takers within the research and development department. PHOTOS: 9 Greatest Compensated Entertainment CEOs Ultraviolet Jobs' lessened responsibilities may also impact UltraViolet, digital privileges management system known as answer to Hollywood's transition online. UltraViolet will unveil soon backed by 70 companies, including Microsoft, Comcast, The new sony, Netflix and many galleries. Plainly absent are Apple and Disney, that could partner by themselves DRM system. That's no small matter, because UltraViolet is heralded by some like a home-video messiah at a time of rapidly declining DVD sales. The technology allows customers to securely create digital lockers for storing their movies with an Isp's server -- the "cloud" -- providing them with use of content on myriad products. "Apple and Disney would be the two large holdouts, so we will have if there's any change by Disney later on," states Wedbush Investments analyst Scott Sutherland, who thinks the Disney-Apple ties could weaken without Jobs like a conduit. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing for that public debut of their iCloud, something that stores music along with other media for using iPads, apple ipods and apple iphones. Missing are movies and Television shows, and Jobs apparently continues to be using the lead in remedying that situation through studio discussions. The status of individuals talks is unclear. "For Hollywood, Steve continues to be enormously tough in discussions," states David Wertheimer, Boss from the Entertainment Technology Center at USC. "Getting Steve from the [picture] may work towards the industry's advantage." Apple TV Where Jobs' instincts may be skipped most, though, is incorporated in the growth and development of Apple TV, just a little-used but extremely convenient device for putting iTunes content -- together with video from Netflix, YouTube, etc. -- on television screens. "Apple TV continues to be through several iterations, and for this to actually explode, it must determine TV," states Jimmy Schaeffler, a senior analyst in the Carmel Group. "Jobs is really a friggin' genius. Without him, it will likely be much harder to determine.Inch Jobs will function as chairman from the Apple board, a brand new position, signaling his intention to stay a figurehead and mentor. But given his decreasing health, the leadership and drive which has assisted redefine Hollywood for that digital age will certainly be reduced. States Schaeffler, "For many people -- especially Apple technical types -- if Jobs were a spiritual figure, he'd be up for beatification faster than Pope John Paul II." -- Kim Masters and Carolyn Giardina led for this report.
